Easter Celebrations in Malta

Easter in Malta is a time of vibrant traditions, religious ceremonies, and festive activities that bring the island to life. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning to experience Malta’s unique Easter charm, The NEU Collective offers the perfect base to explore and celebrate. Here are five activities to enjoy during your stay in Malta:

  1. Good Friday Processions and Liturgy

Good Friday is a solemn yet significant day in Malta, marked by the liturgy in churches across Malta and Gozo, continuing from Maundy Thursday. Once the liturgy ends, the processions begin. These processions are a heartfelt tradition where locals, including adults and children, dress as Biblical characters and walk behind life-sized statues representing the Passion of Christ.

Palm Sunday Processions: Four processions take place on Palm Sunday, the Sunday before Good Friday. These are held in Għaxaq and Għargħur in Malta, and Qala and Rabat (Cathedral) in Gozo. If you’re staying at The Cumberland in Valletta, you can easily reach Gozo via the fast ferry from the harbor.

Good Friday Processions: Starting around 17:00 to 17:30, villages across Malta and Gozo bring out their unique statues in processions. Notably, the statues in Birgu (Malta) and Victoria and Żebbuġ (Gozo) are dressed in fabric clothing, showcasing exquisite artistry from Italy, Spain, and Malta. These statues, made of solid wood or fiberglass, are carried by pallbearers, with six to twelve bearers sharing the weight, depending on the statue’s size.

After witnessing this deeply moving tradition, return to Grana Cucina at The Cumberland for a delicious seafood dinner to complete your day.
